2013 Hypomeeting

May 26, 2013

Hypomeeting - Day 2 brought the same frigid, wet weather conditions as Day 1 but that didn't dampen the spirits or efforts of all the athletes competing.

The first event of the day for the decathlon was the 110 hurdles. Gunnar would place 9th in the event, running a 14.55 and scoring 905 points. Discus was next, where he would throw 41.70m for 699 points. Gunnar vaulted a height of 4.66m for 807 points. After seven events, he was in 4th place overall.

Next up, the javelin. Gunnar had two solid first throws, coming in around 55 m and 54 m but his 3rd toss would be a new PR 60.12 and 740 points. Going into the final event, the 1500, he was still in 4th overall.  He would start the 1500 out in the middle of the pack, pacing carefully and steadily moving up each lap. Halfway through the 3rd lap he would start making his move up to the lead. He held the lead through to the end of the 1500, winning with a time of 4:29.75 and adding 746 points for a grand total of 8136, also a new PR. The win in the 1500 would move him up to 3rd place overall for his first Hypo-meeting.

2013 hypomeeting

May 25, 2013

Day one of the prestigious Hypo-Meeting Decathlon in Gotzis, Austria. Gunnar Nixon is currently in 3rd place overall, only 5 points from Kai Kazmerik of Germany in 2nd and 101 from Damian Warner of Canada in 1st.

The day started with Gunnar finishing a respectable 9th in this world class field in the 100 with a time of 10.92 for 878 points. Temperatures hover around 50 degrees in Gotzis and the weather is less than optimal with rain showers off and on throughout the morning. Coming up next for the only US athlete present at this meet would be the long jump. He recorded a best of 7.23 meters or approximately 23' 8.5". That was good enough for 11th place in that event but moved him up to 7th place overall after two events.

Next up, the shot put. Gunnar would throw 13.26 and end up in 13th place overall after 3 events.

The crowd was up for a real treat with event #4, the high jump. This one is Gunnar's favorite and he was sure to be a crowd pleaser today. His early successes in the jump got the crowd paying attention early. His energy was high and he was definitely feeding off of the energy of the crowd as he engaged them with waves, smiles and asking them to clap. He didn't disappoint, at the end of the high jump, Gunnar was the last one competing. He finished off by winning the event with an incredible 2.15 meters, just a little over 7' 1/2", worth 944 points and moving him to 2nd place overall. In an interview after the event, Gunnar acknowledged the crowd's support and the energy he could feel from them.

The 400 m run is the last event on the first day of the decathlon. Gunnar would turn in a solid run at 48.92, 5th place for the event and 865 points.

Overall, the standings are 1st place, Damian Warner of Canada with 4340 Points - 2nd place, Kai Kazmirek of Genrmany with 4244 points and Gunnar Nixon of the USA in 3rd with 4239 points. Full standings shown below.
